Just like them, he looks down at the ground, and up at the sky only when a storm approaches. He composes phrases of his cinematic poem about the Portuguese province from calloused human hands, flowers, and horsehair. He declares his desire to be invisible, just as plants are invisible to us. Here is Mr. Nobody. Tuned into his surroundings, he adopts the perspective of fauna and flora, working people and machines. Through a horizontal hierarchy of things, he seeks to express the respect he holds for the world, but he does not idealize the countryside. His gaze, filtered through the visible texture and color of the image, stands in opposition on one hand to digitized, unreal aesthetics, and on the other hand to bucolic myth.
